Attendance Office
Absence Note Instructions
Please do not call the school to report an absence for your student. An absence cannot be excused with a phone call. To report an absence, submit a note (see below).
A parent/guardian can submit a note any ONE of the following ways:
1. Submit an electronic note from the Absence Request tab on the Skyward Attendance tile. A doctor/dentist/appointment note can be attached to the request.
2. Email the reason for the absence or a picture/scan of a doctor/dentist/appointment note. mvattendance@cvschools.org
3. Have your student bring a note with your written signature or a doctor/dentist/appointment note to the main office when he/she returns to school.
Please do not submit the same note/information more than one way.
In order for an absence to be excused, a note with the reason for the absence must be submitted within three days of the student’s return to school.
Failure to turn in a valid note within three days of your student’s return will result in the absence being recorded as unlawful.
Unlawful absence letters are sent to your email. The third unlawful absence letter is also mailed home. After the fourth unlawful absence, an invitation to participate in a Student Attendance Improvement Conference will be sent to your email.
After ten absences excused by a parent note and/or unexcused absences, the district notifies the parent through Skyward that a doctor’s note may be required for future absences to be excused.
Early Dismissal Instructions
IN ADVANCE: SKYWARD or EMAIL
When possible, submit early dismissals from the Skyward Absence Request tab or email prior to the end of the school day the day before the dismissal. Uncheck the All Day box in order to enter a specific pick-up time. The student will be given an early dismissal pass in homeroom on the day of the dismissal. The secretary does not call to release the student. Parents need to sign their student out in the office. If leaving for an appointment, email an appointment verification note or have your student bring it to the office.
SAME DAY: WRITTEN NOTE
Students with written dismissal requests and dismissals submitted after the deadline, should stop by the office to pick up their pass. The student should leave class at the time indicated on the pass.
END OF DAY DISMISSALS:
Please do not arrive to dismiss your student without prior notification during the last period of the school day unless it is urgent. It is often difficult to locate students during this period, due to various flex assignments and music ensembles.
Two Hour Standard
A half-day absence shall be recorded if a student arrives two hours after the school start time, leaves two hours before the school end time, or is absent for any two-hour period during the day.
Parent Dismissals
If a parent removes a student from school due to illness or other reasons without a nurse dismissal or a dismissal by a principal/counselor, the time missed will be unexcused.
Trip Instructions
A student will be permitted to take not more than two educational trips per school year, not to exceed a total of five school days. Days over the five-day limit will be recorded as unlawful. Trips resulting in eleven or more consecutive unlawful days will require the parent/guardian to withdraw the student before the trip and re-register prior to his/her return to school. An administrator and the family may decide that a combination of educational trip days and other excused or unexcused/unlawful absences may be applied depending on the nature of the trip.
Trips that will not require 11 or more consecutive unlawful absences
(Example: 15 day trip would use 5 educational trip days plus 10 unlawful days)
Submit an Educational Trip Request prior to the trip/event. Forms are available in the main office. Students should have teachers initial the form, then the student should take the form to the main office for principal approval. A signed copy of the form will be sent to the parent(s) email. Trips taken without prior principal approval could result in unlawful absences.
Educational trips will not be approved absences during the first or last ten (10) school days.
Educational trips will not be approved on PSSA, Keystone, midterm, or final testing days. PSSA and Keystone test dates change annually. Please check the district website and school calendar for testing dates.
Take Your Child to Work events, non-school sponsored sports, and music/dance/theatre performances require an approved Educational Trip Request for the absences to be excused.
Trips that would require 11 or more consecutive unlawful absences
The withdrawal form is available in the main office.
Online re-registration can be done at cvschools.org > Menu > About Us > Central Registration.
The student is required to turn in his/her laptop and will lose access to Schoology while withdrawn. When the student returns, his/her schedule and locker will be unchanged.
